Developing our people is at the heart of what we do

Joe Bryant
Senior solicitor Joe joined CMS Cameron McKenna after qualifying as a solicitor in 1998. He works in the Insurance group in the firm’s Bristol office. The firm runs various career development programmes for solicitors, starting with the ‘Passport' for newly-qualifieds and then moving through the 'Excel' programme (2-5 years post qualification) and, finally, the 'Senior Solicitors Development Programme' (5+ years post qualification). I’m currently part way through this last programme. The courses are tailored to our own needs and we can choose which modules we want to take. The SSDP aims to give a good grounding in the management skills necessary for running the firm - rather than the other work-related courses, which are designed to hone the every day legal skills needed to do our jobs. That means I’m learning how to interpret financial accounts, how to deal with employee issues such as coaching and appraisals, and how to be an effective manager.”
